Ananda Kanda

Just below the Anahata or Heart Chakra, said to be suspended like a pendant, is a space called the ''Ananda Kanda'' which means the ''root of bliss''. It is the secret inner altar where the Ishta Devata, or personalized deity, is worshipped.

''It is a centre where devotion is intensified..''

~ Sw. Nishchalananda

Here is said to be the Celestial Wish-Fulfilling Tree ~ the Kalpa Taru or Kalpavriksha. It is one of the beneficial things that was manifested during the churning of the ocean of milk. In this heart cave one is said to receive what one truly wishes for, if the intention/will is strong enough. In some places the Kalpa Taru becomes the ''Chintamani'' or Wish-Fulfilling Jewel. It is still a tree, this chintamani, located on an island in the middle of a beautiful lake, which is itself in the middle of a beautiful garden.

It is the tree of bounty, able to provide all needs.

I find the Ananda Kanda a particularly attractive focus. The atman, the ''I am'', is said to live here. There is not a huge amount said about Ananda Kanda and what is said is often contradictory. It's described variously as red or white or pink. I think that by focusing there ourselves without any preconceptions, we can come to know it as we truly perceive it to be. It is the spiritual heart.

Surely there is a window from heart to heart:
they are not separate and far from each other…..

….When love for God has been doubled in your heart,
there is no doubt that God has love for you.

  • ''OM. In the centre of the castle of Brahman (God), our own body, there is a small shrine in the form of a lotus flower, and within can be found a small space. We should find who dwells there, and we should want to know him.

And if anyone asks - ''Who is he who dwells in a small shrine in the form of a lotus flower in the centre of the castle of Brahman? Whom should we want to find and to know?'' - we can answer...

''The little space withing the heart is as great as this vast Universe. the heavens and the earth are there, and the sun and the moon and the stars; fire and lightning and winds are there; and all that now is and all that is not; for the whole Universe is in Him and He dwells in our heart.'' ''

~ Chandogya Upanishad, (8th to 6th centuries BC), extract from Verse 8.
