Why Zen coloring is the new meditation



A multicolored and regressive tidal wave is invading the free time of millions of people in the world.

Sales figures for pencils, pens and notebooks are recovering from the hair of the beast. Parents invite themselves to the children's games table. The novels make more and more places with strange notebooks at the top of the sales rankings.

This phenomenon is the Zen coloring.

WHY THIS PHENOMENON?

Because zen coloring, also called anti-stress coloring, is much more than a pleasant pastime. It is also a therapeutic practice long recognized and brought up to date by modern science.

Therapists have known the benefits of coloring since the early 1900s. The famous Carl Jung, inventor of analytical psychology, already prescribed coloring sessions for his patients to calm them and help them refocus.

Some ancestral Buddhist practices still today consist of contemplating mandalas and imbibing every detail to accompany meditation and harmonize inwardly.

Modern science has also been interested in the question. Zen coloring, like meditation, would have benefits in the fight against anxiety, in cases of attention deficit, but also to heal more effectively.

    
A 2006 study, for example, found that art therapy has helped women with cancer to overcome the physical and psychological side effects of treating the disease.

    
Another study of the same year concluded that after only one hour of destressant coloring, cancer patients of all ages had felt comfort and relief via this activity.



WHAT HAPPENS WHEN COLORING?

Zen coloring activates the logical part of the brain, thereby leading to a creative state of mind.

    
Coloring is an activity that centers the spit on a specific point. In fact, the amygdala, the part of our brain related to our responses to fear, is less solicited. The logical consequence of this change is a greater sense of calm and a reduction in anxiety "- Dr. Ben Michaelis

The physical sensation of touching a pencil that glides on the paper. The creation of curves, colours. Conscious filling, attention to nuances, details, simple beauty of the present moment, make colouring an activity of mindfulness

This activity can therefore be used to calm down and relax . It is even possible to enjoy its virtues in a restless environment (ex: lunch break with other people) by associating it with relaxing music.

To better manage his emotions.

The lack of structure in thought, stress, compulsive, depressive, obsessive, angry behavior can be relieved by the practice of therapeutic coloring. Always having a pencil in hand has become a daily habit for some followers of this practice.

To develop his creativity.

By requiring him to refocus, the coloring for adults acts like a true gymnastics for the brain. By applying the frontal lobe, coloring increases the propensity to solve complex problems and to organize.

To replace bad habits.

For many people, boredom and free time are devoted to compulsive activities, such as reading his messages, reading social networks, nibbling, thinking negatively. These conscious activities, unlike coloring, offer no mental rest and are sometimes harmful to health. Replacing them with a beautiful coloring is a great way to reinvent your life.

  • I bought my daughter some of those mandala colouring books for Christmas, she enjoys them, and doodles away at them and in general. We are both doodlers, and one of my sons as well, it must be genetic. Boys tend to be more secretive about doodling.
