A herb I have been thinking about recently.
I used to occasionally take the tincture when the children were new born, as my sleep was disturbed but now for different reasons I will use the dry herb, as a tea, combined with Nettle.
What is it?
Avena Sativa is the Latin name, Sativa in Latin means that which is sown or cultivated, because oats - avena - are a crop that has long been with us
What is it good for?
Oatstraw is a nutritive tonic for the whole body, especially the nervous system. It is high in B vitamins.
It is used where there is fatigue, nervous exhaustion, unsettled sleep, insomnia, . It also treats headaches and weariness.
Oatstraw is good where there is anxiety or tired nerves, increased nervousness. It is a restorative herb. It treats low energy and stress.
It improves the heart muscle. Oatstraw fights inflammation in the heart. Lowers risks of blood clots and keeps the arteries supple.
Oatstraw also is high in calcium and silica which makes it good for bones, teeth, and nails. And it is full of magnesium too. These minerals are more easily absorbed from oatstraw than from supplements. It stimulates hormones such as luteinising hormone which actually build bone strength.
It increases libido where there are issues and restores normal sex function and drive. It helps ladies where there may be some vaginal dryness due to hormonal changes. It stimulates mens hormones where there are problems with low testosterone or erectile disfunction.
It is used in baths for muscle pain. And for skin conditions.
Oatstraw is even used where there are addiction problems, to ease withdrawal.
How to use it?
I am not going to give doses as I'm not a herbalist. I usually make a tea to the strength I like the taste, and this takes experimenting, so maybe two teaspoons to a tea pot of hot water, plus one teaspoon of another herb. Use a herb container/infuser in the pot or a strainer when pouring. Honey if you want. More herb if you prefer. Dried rosehips might help the taste too.
If you cannot find it loose in health stores, order it online.
I am combining with Nettle, because nettle is so good for the blood and bone density as I get older - will see how it all goes!
